Did you come out to see us on August 12th at Zappo’s Headquarters? We were there serving up some saucy taco action at the Hopped Taco Throwdown hosted by Motley Brews!
We got there early to make sure everything was perfectly set up, then at 7 PM, the action began. Our Executive Chef Erik Wepfer was there to dish out two fantastic creations: On a Beach in Baja, with Beer-Battered Striped Bass, Avocado Crema, and Caramelized Lime; and Silly Wabbit, with Nduja (spicy spreadable pork) Braised Rabbit and Charred Pineapple/Strawberry Salsa. They were so good we had to have 2 of each!
Chef Erik was there along with 11 other chefs to compete head to head in anticipation of becoming the Hopped Taco Champion in one of three categories: Hopped Taco (beer-infused), Taco Loco (most unique) and Taco Dulce (dessert). Two of our sister properties brought home the trophies, with Fix’s Chef Sterling Buckley taking the Hopped Taco prize for his Beer Belly (Beer Braised Pork Belly, Drunk Pickles, and “Magic” (powdered wagyu beef fat); and Herringbone’s Chef Geno running away with the Taco Dulce trophy for his Taco Dolce (Pizzelle, Philly Cheesecake, and Oculto & Strawberry Granita). The final trophy went to the awesome Jamie Tran from Black Sheep for a crazy salmon skin taco called the Taco De La Chinois. Congratulations to everyone!
Of course, along with the amazing culinary creations, there was also a serious amount of beer flowing at the throwdown. Some awesome breweries like Ellis Island, CraftHaus, and Saint Archer were pouring up their favorite brews in sample sized amounts for everyone to try. There were also some infused waters and kombucha teas to balance everything out!
